Watch Conor McGregor finally have his say about UFC’s decision to strip his title

It took a week but it was worth the wait

“Eddie is still unconscious!”

The wait is over. Conor McGregor has spoken about the UFC’s decision to strip him of his featherweight title and he is not having it.

Last Saturday, John Anik announced during Fight Night 101 that McGregor had agreed to relinquish the 145lbs belt he won last December.

Since then we have had everyone chime in on the decision – from John Kavanagh to Dana White and thousands in between – but McGregor kept his counsel. Until last night, that is.

At a Q&A session with fight fans, in Belfast, McGregor spoke about his recently granted boxing licence, barbs from the Floyd Mayweather camp and a Paulie Malignaggi call-out. He did not hold back when asked about the UFC now referring to him as a former featherweight champion. He declared:

“I’m also in the middle of something with the UFC. They’re trying to strip me and I’m like, ‘Naaah, I ain’t stripped’.

“I’ve still got that belt in my home. I’m still the two-weight world champion. Someone’s going to have to come and take that off me.

“I see articles, I see stuff online but I don’t see the belt not in my presence. The belt is right there. There are two world titles in my home.”

Asked if he gave up his title or if he had, in fact, been stripped of it against his will, McGregor’s response made reference to deposed lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez:

“Eddie’s still unconscious! What do you mean? What do you mean?!

“I only fought last week… Those belts are mine; they’re mine. Whatever they want to say – ‘Ah we took the belt and now it is this guy’s belt’ – you can play with those fake belts all you want.

“Jose [Aldo] was KO’ed, Eddie was KO’ed. You’re looking at the two-weight world champion and that’s that!

“I”ll say to the UFC – and I love the company – ‘You’re fooling nobody. YOU’RE FOOLING NOBODY WITH THAT!’ But best of luck to them.”

McGregor says the UFC will have to send someone to physically get his featherweight belt, if they truly want it.

Maybe the UFC will need that army after all…
