As Major League Soccer grows in popularity across the world, they seem to have adopted an unwelcome facet of the beautiful game – football violence.
Ahead of the New York derby (New York Red Bulls versus New York City FC) – only the third game between the two sides – there was bedlam on the New Jersey streets as the rival fans clashed.
Various objects were thrown in the skirmish before police sirens interrupted the rowing foes. Perhaps most bizarre were the chants of ‘OO ARE YA!’ seemingly in faux-English accents.
It’s all a far cry from the shiny happy sanitised version of the American game that MLS are so keen to promote…
