Four films on Netflix that are definitely worth watching over the weekend

Paul Moore

They’re all highly recommended.

With the weekend fast approaching, it’s very likely that you’ll be making your plans for the coming days. If you fancy a night on the couch, here are some titles on Netflix that we highly recommend.

In recent weeks, we’ve suggested Captain Phillips, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and more, but here are a few more gems.

The Hunting Ground

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 93%

Plot: The Oscar-nominated documentary is a startling exposé of rape culture on U.S. campuses, institutional cover-ups and the brutal toll that these crimes take on victims and their families.

Weaving together verité footage and first-person testimonies, the film follows survivors as they pursue their education while fighting for justice – despite harsh retaliation, harassment and pushback at every level.

The critics said: “Heartbreaking, infuriating and unmissable” – Entertainment Weekly.

Watch it if you’re in the mood for: A harrowing documentary that examines a very topical issue.

The Young Offenders

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 100%

Plot: Inspired by the true story of Ireland’s biggest cocaine seizure in 2007,  two teenage boys cycle 160km on stolen bikes pursued by police to find a missing bale of cocaine worth 7 million euro.

The critics said: “This exuberantly daft teenage comedy has some similarities to The Inbetweeners but with a kinder, gentler wit” – The Times

Watch it if you’re in the mood for: A giddy laugh and a film with heart.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 74%

Plot:  A veteran spy (Colin Firth) of a super-secret organization recruits an unrefined but promising street kid (Taron Egerton) into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius (Samuel L. Jackson)

The critics said: “VaughnÂ’s love letter to spy movies may be uneven in places, but itÂ’s ultra-violent, envelope-pushing, and fun enough to overcome the flaws” – Empire

Watch it if you’re in the mood for: Switching your brain off and having some fun. *That* scene in the church is worth a viewing alone.

What We Do In The Shadows

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 96%

Plot: Follow the lives of three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life’s obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood.

Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection, modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts. It’s excellent.

The critics said: “the best horror-comedy since Edgar Wright’s “Shaun Of The Dead” – Cinemixtape

Watch it if you’re in the mood for: Something that’s truly original, surprising and funny. It’s back on Netflix and we can’t recommend it highly enough.
