Hellboy will be getting an R-Rated reboot with a new director and star

Paul Moore

Game of Thrones fans will be happy with the new director.

Given that Guillermo Del Toro is one of the finest filmmakers around – see Pan’s Labyrinth, Blade II, The Devil’s Backbone and more for proof of his genius –  we were always hoping that he would return to complete his Hellboy trilogy.

As many of you will know, the Hellboy films are a passion project for the Mexican director and despite making two very enjoyable films – Hellboy is rated 81% on Rotten Tomatoes while its sequel, The Golden Army, has an 85% rating – we now know that the Oscar-nominated filmmaker won’t be behind the lens for the next adventure of ‘Big Red’.

Shame, who else would have the balls to include a Barry Manilow sing-along in a summer blockbuster?

Much like Del Toro’s adaptation of The Hobbit and At the Mountain of Madness, Hellboy 3 won’t be getting off the ground but there is some good news for fans of the character.

Its creator Mike Mignola announced that an R-rated reboot of the franchise will be made and that Stranger Things star David Harbour will be in the lead role. Can he match Ron Perlman’s gruff and grizzled take on the character?

Well, fear not because Neil Marshall will helm the project. In case you don’t know, the English director is responsible for the wonderful Dog Soldiers and The Descent.

Oh yeah, he also directed two of the most memorable episodes in Game of Thrones, Blackwater (Stannis attacking King’s Landing) and Watchers on the Wall (Jon Snow leading the Night’s Watch against the invading forces of the Wildlings)

While we’re sad to see that Del Toro isn’t directing, Marshall is a very solid choice.
