High times if the Liberal Democrats get in.
The Liberal Democrats have confirmed their plans to change the drugs laws which will allow for the creation of a legal market for the production and sale of cannabis, if they’re elected in the upcoming general election.
The party are expected to include this policy in their manifesto and they believe that by legalising cannabis, £1bn can be generated in taxes that will be reinvested into education and healthcare.
If the Lib Dems were elected, Britain wouldn’t descend completely into Cheech and Chong’s dream location because cannabis would only be available through licensed outlets and sold to adults.
As reported by Sky News, Julian Huppert, Liberal Democrat candidate and former Home Affairs Select Committee member, said “Cannabis is freely available and widely used. It generates significant health problems and vast profits for organised crime. The current approach is a disaster for young people, whose mental and physical health is being harmed by an increasingly potent product. There are no age checks, and no controls on quality or strength. ‘Skunk’ is widespread and the only ID you need to buy it is a £20 note. Successive governments have ceded total control of a significant public health problem to organised crime.”
Huppert states that this new legal approach would reduce the the harmful effects while being beneficial to the economy.
