A handful of fans actually believe Roberto Carlos has signed for Aston Villa

Imagine it

To be fair, we don’t blame the fans here.

We blame the Aston Villa chairman for failing to make his joke clear enough when he posed for a photograph with Brazil and Real Madrid legend Roberto Carlos on Friday.

Dr. Tony Xia presented Carlos with a Villa jersey and suggested that he’d finally managed to sign one of the greatest left-backs of all time.

Carlos recently revealed that he’d almost signed for the Villans in the mid-1990s.

“I actually came close to joining Aston Villa early in my career,” Carlos told the Sun.

“I met with the club, but nothing happened. Birmingham were also interested, but it didn’t go anywhere and I later joined Inter Milan.”

Carlos spent one season with Inter Milan before making the move to Real Madrid, the club for which he made 512 appearances.

And while he came close to bombing down the left flank at Villa Park 22 years ago, Villa’s current chairman and owner suggested he’d finally got his man when he came face-to-face with Carlos at an event this week.

Carlos is 44 years old so the chances of him coming out of retirement are rather slim. But certain Villa supporters felt that the deal was a legitimate one.
