Rory McIlroy sacks long-time caddy J.P. Fitzgerald

Massive news this morning

Rory McIlroy has fired long-time caddy J.P. Fitzgerald, according to reports.

Reuters reports that Rory McIlroy has split with Fitzgerald in the wake of a poor run of form in 2017.

The pair had worked together for nine years, with Fitzgerald being on the bag for Rory’s rise to the top which includes four major championships.

The Northern Irishman hasn’t been in the best of form this year, which is a possible reason for the shake-up but that is to be confirmed.

This parting of ways only comes a week after and a half after McIlroy publicly thanked his caddy for kicking him into gear in the first round of the British Open following a dire start.

The 28-year-old was five over par through six holes in the opening round of the event only for Fitzgerald to offer words of wisdom which helped the 2016 FedEx Cup winner finish one over par in the end and eventually finished a tied for fourth.

The wire service is reporting that McIlroy will confirm the news upon arrival to Firestone Country Club this week where he is set to play the Bridgestone Invitational.
