Here’s what Melisandre was talking about in *that* scene with Varys

She spoke cryptically, but it has been dissected.

Come on folks, if you hadn’t guessed by now, this post contains spoilers for the latest episode in the new series of Game of Thrones.

In an episode which Game of Thrones fans have been craving for, there was plenty to satisfy every fan.

Jon and Daenerys finally met, face to face. Cersei had her revenge. Jamie ended Olenna, but not before she fired some vicious parting shots.

Then there was the chat between two of the slipperiest characters in all of Westeros, Varys and Melisandre.

The pair shared a discussion on the cliffs. One that was laced with with clues and subterfuge. One that had many people wondering what the hell they were talking about.

Varys advised the Red Woman to leave Westeros and never return, as she admitted that she was headed for Volantis and that was when she dropped this bomb.

“I’ve done my part. I’ve brought ice and fire together… My time whispering in the ears of kings has come to an end… Neither of us is common folk anymore… Oh, I will return dear Spider. One last time. I have to die in this strange country, just like you.”

Varys was clearly stunned by what she said, but not in a puzzled sense. Varys looked stunned because she seemed to have information that he didn’t expect anyone else to have. And it’s not the first time she’s left him shaken, as the below moment from Season 6 of the series shows.

“Terrible things happen for a reason,” the Red Woman told him.

“Take what happened to you, Lord Varys, when you were a child. If not for your mutilation at the hand of a second-rate sorcerer, you wouldn’t be here helping the Lord’s chosen bring his light into the world. Knowledge has made you powerful but there’s still so much you don’t know. Do you remember what you heard that night when the sorcerer tossed your parts in the fire? You heard a voice call out from the flames, do you remember? Should I tell you what the voice said? Should I tell you the name of the one who spoke?”

Varys himself mentioned this mysterious voice when speaking to Tyrion back in season three.

“I still dream of that night. Not of the sorcerer, not of his blade — I dream of the voice from the flames. Was it a god, a demon, a conjurer’s trick? I don’t know. But the sorcerer called and a voice answered and ever since that day I have hated magic and all those who practice it.”

Until now, we hadn’t known what the voice in the flames was, or who it belonged to. But now it seems clear that it belonged to the Lord of Light.

And the look on the face of Varys when Melisandre says: “One last time. I have to die in this strange country, just like you.”

This suggests that Varys heard his own death foretold by the Lord of Light when he was a child.
