The new X-Men films are a horror trilogy and the first trailer is extremely dark

Paul Moore

We’re massive fans of this approach and the trailer.

After Logan was released, plenty of fans argued that James Mangold’s film was one of the greatest comic-book films that was ever made. Scratch that because Logan isn’t just a great comic-book film, it’s a great film. Period.

Hugh Jackman may have handed over his adamantium claws, but it’s clear that this approach is the best way to breathe new life into the X-Men saga because Logan didn’t feel like it was adhering to the tone, style and rules of the previous films in the franchise.

In fact, Logan was more like an old-school Western that wasn’t afraid to examine themes like mortality, family and legacy. Truth be told, we’re all in favour of comic-book films taking this type of approach and the trailer for the new X-Men spin-off, The New Mutants, is certainly that.

Staring Anya Taylor Joy (The Witch), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), the very first trailer is dark, ominous and quite disturbing in places.

In fact, plenty of people were wondering if it’s a horror film as opposed to a more “kiddie friendly” blockbuster.

Well, that’s the point because in an interview with IGN, the director of the film, Josh Boone, revealed that The New Mutants was originally pitched as “a trilogy of films” and that they’ll all be horrors.

“We brought it to Fox as a trilogy of films, really all based on that long run by [Bill] Sienkiewicz, and kind of incorporates some stuff from later issues in the ’80s. These are all going to be horror movies, and they’ll all be their own distinct kind of horror movies,” he said.

If you haven’t seen the trailer then feast your eyes on this.

We’re very impressed.
