Young kid gets within touching distance of Rooney before being ushered away (Video)

This was so close to being one to tell the grandchildren about…

Sadly, ‘I almost met Wayne Rooney on the night he became England’s all-time leading goalscorer’ doesn’t really work as a brag.

We’re not sure about the full story here, but this intrepid young fan/ball-boy somehow made it on to the pitch after England’s 2-0 victory over Switzerland on Tuesday night.

In fact, he was tantalisingly close to meeting record-breaking Rooney.

Sadly a vigilant steward spotted the mini-invader, and ushered him away from the England captain at the very last moment.

We’ve got two theories here:

1. He was a genuine fan who simply wanted to meet his hero;
2. Rooney is involved in some sort of Truman Show lifetime hoax, and the young lad is an extra who desperately wanted to wake ‘Wayne’ up to his make believe reality.

Which one is true? Probably number 1…but we would say that, wouldn’t we.
