Not long to wait now.
In a recentĀ Q&A to promote the new season, Helen McCrory was full of praise for the creator of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight. McCrory (Aunt Polly) believes that the talented writer does something that very few others can, he writes great roles for women.
“‘He really enjoys writing women and he does it very well,” she said and as fans of the show will know, this is very true.Ā In fact, Knight has previously stated that “the female characters are strong and central. They are main players within the whole thing.”
There might be more men in the Peaky Blinders gang, but the women have a very strong say in the direction, decisions, and destiny of the show.
They’re not just damsels in distress,Ā they’re independent and resourceful.
Think about it.
Ada was strong enoughĀ to defy Tommy’s wishes and marry a known Communist. Grace was clever, brave and resourceful enough to play Tommy againstĀ Inspector Campbell.
Elsewhere, in Season 2, May has enough balls to ask Tommy straight up if he plans on having sex with her and as for Aunt Polly, well, she’s arguably the best character in the show.
Bearing this in mind, it’s fair to say that Peaky Blinders has a history of strong roles for women and this is going to continue throughout Season 4.
In the new episodes, Irish actress Charlie Murphy will be playing a new character that’s closely resembled on Jessie Eden –Ā a Communist trade union activist who made history in the 1920s by convincing her all-female co-workers at the Joseph Lucas motor components factory inĀ BirminghamĀ to down tools as part of the general strike.
As fansĀ of the show will know, this was mentioned in Season 3 when the Shelby women downed tools and headed out to hear her speak at Birminghamās Bull Ring.
Well, in Season 4 it appears that the Peaky Blinders and Jessie are going to have closer dealings.
In case you need reminding, Peaky Blinders is back this Wednesday at 21:00. We can’t wait.
Here’s a behind the scenes look to get you even more excited.
