Netflix have added ‘one of the most riveting and remarkable documentaries’ in recent memory

Paul Moore

97% on Rotten Tomatoes for “the must-see documentary of 2016.”

Scandal, dick pics, a shattered ego, power and a marriage that’s falling apart. Who said politics is boring?

Given the tumultuous events in the political climate of the UK and the US, it’s somewhat fitting that one of the best documentaries of 2016 was focused on the political realm. Much like Bryan Fogel’s examination of Russia’s doping history in Icarus,  Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg struck gold while they were making their documentary, Weiner.

Those with good memories might actually remember Anthony Weiner’s infamous bid to become the Mayor of New York City in 2013 but if you’ve never heard of him then don’t worry, his story is absolutely fascinating. Trust us, even people with zero interest in politics will be interested.

With unrestricted access to Weiner’s New York City mayoral campaign, this documentary reveals the human story behind the scenes of a high-profile political scandal as it unfolds, and offers an unfiltered look at how much today’s politics is driven by an appetite for spectacle.

Without giving too much away, if you’ve got absolutely no tolerance for the lies, spin, and bulls**t that politicians frequently peddle, you’ll revel in this portrait of a political and personal collapse that’s as queasy as it is undeniably compelling.

Since being released, Weiner has established itself as one of the most critically-acclaimed documentaries in recent memory – it currently has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 84% on Metacritic. It was also nominated for a BAFTA Film Award and won the Critics Choice Documentary Award.

Here’s what the critics have said about it:

San Francisco Chronicle – “The movie goes from being interesting to riveting, from “Yes, this is quite good” to you-cannot-leave-your-seat-and-don’t-even-want-to-blink.”

Rolling Stone – “This spellbinder about a politician in free fall would be hilarious if it weren’t so agonisingly true.”

Variety – “A rollicking and never-dull insider’s view of a political campaign that leaves fascinating questions unanswered.”

Wall Street Journal – “Weiner, an extraordinary documentary feature about the disgraced New York politician Anthony Weiner, has it all — the surreal spectacle of contemporary retail politics, the sizzle of media madness and the mysteries of psychodrama.”

Minneapolis Star Tribune – “Running a taut 97 minutes, it’s the must-see documentary film of the year.”

Here’s a look at what’s in store. Weiner is now available to watch on Netflix.
