As far as debuts go, that wasn’t bad going at all for Virgil Van Dijk.
A winner – a late winner – at The Kop end against your local rivals. The stuff of dreams for anyone pulling on the red shirt for the first time.
Van Dijk finally sealed his move from Southampton last week, becoming the most expensive defender ever in the process. Inevitably, there’s been plenty of talk about his £75m transfer fee in the time since the deal was confirmed. It’s not likely to go away any time soon, either (at least not until someone pays even more money out for a defender).
Still, very few Liverpool fans seemed too concerned with his price tag in the moments following his winner. In fact, a hell of a lot of them (Jamie Carragher included) joked that his first goal for the club almost justified it…
