Stop what you’re doing!
This seems to be the general consensus whenever Drake drops anything new, especially when it comes out of the blue. And that’s precisely what happened this morning when the Toronto rapper decided to gift fans with a new EP containing two new songs.
Titled Scary Hours, Drake announced via Instagram that he would be dropping it at midnight U.S. time. The mini EP contains two tracks, “God’s Plan” and “Diplomatic Immunity”. Showing the diversity in Drizzy’s creative arsenal, both tracks offer something different.
“God’s Plan” focuses more on the harmonies while expressing a belief in the idea that we’re just chess pieces on a board controlled by a higher power and that everything works out the way it does because of that.
Continuing to express his loyalty to his inner circle, “God’s Plan” is also Drake feeling like he needs to have separation from those outside of his camp because so many people want something from him, they always have an ulterior motive in his eyes.
He also touches upon his constant internal battle with commitment, something he’s always struggled with, when he spits: “She say, ‘Do you love me?’ I tell her, ‘Only partly’/Â I only love my bed and my momma, I’m sorry.”
Introspective Drake comes out to play on “Diplomatic Immunity”. Aside from the literal meaning of having the privilege of exemption from certain laws and taxes that is granted to diplomats by the state in which they are working, the title is a play on the demise of Cam’ron’s group The Diplomats (their 2003 album is titled Diplomatic Immunity), the drama that ensued and the peace talks that have since transpired.
On the track he even makes a reference to his brief and highly publicised relationship with Jennifer Lopez – “2010 was when I lost my halo/ 2017 I lost a JLo.”
New Drake always makes for a great day. Listen to Scary Hours below:
