He could fire them to safety.
Daniel Sturridge is on the verge of joining Newcastle United on a short term loan, according to The Times.
Sturridge is in desperate need of a move away from Anfield if he is to play first team football regularly and Newcastle are in desperate need of a goalscoring striker if they are to stay in the top flight. In theory it’s the ideal move for the striker.
Newcastle will pay a loan fee of about £1.5m and cover the player’s wages of £120,000 per week.
Sturridge could have gone to Inter Milan, but he was hesitant to move to Italy, especially to a club whose captain and star player, Mauro Icardi, is first choice striker in a team who only play with one. The Times report that Sturridge was keen on a move to Sevilla, but the Spanish club didn’t make an official offer for him.
A switch to Newcastle until the end of the season could be a move that works well for all three parties. Newcastle have only scored 22 goals in 24 league games this season and their three main strikers, Joselu, Ayoze Perez and Dwight Gayle have only scored 11 goals between them.
Sturridge will add much needed firepower to the struggling Magpies as they fight to stay up.
Rafa Benitez will hope that the possibility of a place in England’s World Cup squad will kickstart Sturridge’s return to form.
