Chev Chelios is back!
Granted, we’re now in Oscar season and there’s a lot to be said for an atmospheric, slow building and incredibly tense drama. On the other side of this, we’re fairly certain that Phantom Thread and The Shape of Water don’t contain a scene where a man willingly jumps out of a helicopter just so he can beat the living shit out of his enemy.
On that note, the Crank films really are unlike anything that you’ve ever experienced before. Before John Wick took his revenge on those mobsters for killing his dog, Chev Chelios was delivering batshit beatdowns on any gangster, hitman and kung-fu mobster that came his way.
Crank and 2009’s Crank: High Voltage are absolutely brilliant because they’re the closest thing that you’ll get to a cinematic mix of The Looney Tunes, Grand Theft Auto, and John Woo’s films. Trust us, they’re bonkers and brilliant in equal measure.
Since being released, the Jason Statham-starring actioners have become cult classics and fans are itching to see the third instalment.
In an interview with The Movie Crypt podcast, one of the co-directors of Crank, Brian Taylor, revealed that he has thought about completing the trilogy but only if the third film is more “fucked up” than its predecessors.
“My feeling about Crank 3 is that Crank 3 should be as exponentially more fucked up than Crank 2 as Crank 2 was Crank 1. Obviously, there’s been talk here and there but I’ve never really felt that creatively it was fucked up enough to really do. Because the studio will get in contact with us: ‘What do you guys think about this?’ ‘What do you guys think about that?’ And the scenarios are always very tame compared to what I think it should be. Obviously, there’s a great movie there somewhere. I don’t know if it’s going to be Jason Statham in a wheelchair, 40 years from now. I think there should be a Crank cinematic universe. Not just one movie. So who knows? There’s nothing in the works right now. But you never know. Me and [co-director Mark Neveldine] are brothers for life.”
In the immortal words of every single person in the Crank films: “Fuck you, Chelios!”
