Prepare to be terrified.
Aside from being very well made films, there’s something definitely old school about The Conjuring films. Granted, they’re set in the past but with so many technical toys, CGI wizards and special effects maestros to work with, the films in The Conjuring universe largely avoid CGI trickery.
This being said, if special effects are used, they’re usually seamless and perfectly blend in with the story. As film fans will know, there’s nothing worse than seeing dodgy CGI on screen because it takes you out of the moment- case in point, I Am Legend and World War Z.
On that note, the Conjuring 2 introduced horror fans to the demon Valak and since that superb scene where Lorraine Warren was painting and the demonic spirit of The Nun drew closer and closer, the demon has left a lasting impression.
As for the plot of the spinoff, the film will focus on a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania that takes her own life. A priest with a haunted past and a novitiate that’s on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together, they uncover the order’s unholy secret and confront a malevolent force in the form of the demonic.
After announcing his plans to remake The Crow, director Colin Hardy is a busy man because he’s also directing The Nun.
In an interview with The Movie Crypt, he said that the film will feature practical effects whenever possible. “I’ve come from a love of practical. It’s not just nostalgic, it’s things being real and tangible, and you can light them in front of the camera if they’re there, you can touch them, people can see them, you can make them wet and they look great. All of that stuff you can do in CG but it takes such a lot of work to do it to the right level…I always want to say, ‘Let’s do everything as much as we possibly can for real, including in-camera stunts, effects, and then use the CGI to be beautiful, original, invisible tool.’”
As for plot details, Hardy didn’t reveal too much but he did say that the script “was really exciting, when I read the script, that it was something new. So, it’s part of this universe that’s been established, with a character that appeared in a movie, but it wasn’t like doing a sequel or a remake.”
With talk of a sequel already underway, we can’t wait to see what The nun’s like when it’s released on September 7.
