Russia awarded 3-0 victory following Montenegro crowd trouble

Igor-y incident...

UEFA have reacted emphatically following the disturbing scenes from last month’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Podgorica.

The game between Montenegro and Russia wasn’t even a minute old when Igor Akinfeev, the Russian goalkeeper, was struck by a flare thrown from the crowd.

Akinfeev was treated on the pitch and was eventually taken to hospital where he was treated for burns.

Despite the hostile atmosphere, the game continued until a missile struck another Russian player in the second half. This prompted the referee to abandon the game with 23 minutes still left to play.

As well as awarding Russia a 3-0 victory, Montenegro’s FA have been fined and ordered to play their next two home games behind closed doors.
