British sprinter Zharnel Hughes saw off stiff competition to defeat American Tyson Gay and the 2011 Jamaican world champion Yohan ‘The Beast’ Blake to win the 100m event at the Boston Games on Sunday. He won with a time of 9.99 seconds, the very first time he has ran a sub 10 second time over that distance.
Hughes’ personal best remains 10.01 seconds, however, as there was a strong headwind of 2.4m/sec tailwind.
The rangy sprinter has previously finished first during the Commonwealth 200m last month but was disqualified for impeding the path of the eventual gold medallist Jereem Richards after the 22-year-old’s left arm made contact with the other runner during the race.
