Liverpool’s Molly McCann apologises for missing weight for UFC debut

The fight is going ahead

It was a busy morning for the towel.

Only two fighters missed weight for UFC Liverpool and, as fate would have it, they happened to be the hometown heroes.

Molly McCann left it late to weigh in as she showed up with just seconds remaining in Saturday’s two-hour weigh-in window and weighed in at 127lbs for her flyweight meeting with Gillian Robertson.

McCann was given an additional hour to cut the pound but the weight just wouldn’t come off and she re-weighed at 127lbs too.

The Cage Warriors flyweight champion will still make her UFC debut on Sunday night, after agreeing to meet some stipulations, namely that she can weigh no more than 136lbs when she checks into the arena for fight night and that she forfeits 20 per cent of her fight purse to Robertson.

McCann apologised for failing to make weight and vowed to make it up to fans when she sets foot in the Octagon for the very first time.

“I won’t give you an excuse, I have never missed weight in 29 fights, and today is the first time I have. On my part I’d like to apologise to Gillian missing weight, I didn’t give up, I stayed cutting until the final moment,” McCann said.

“I would also like to apologise to the fans. No excuses, the fight goes ahead and tomorrow I get to make up for the lack of professionalism today.”

Darren Till, who is scheduled to fight Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in the main event of the evening, weighed in way over the welterweight limit, registering 174.5lbs when he stepped on the scales.

A family emergency delayed Till but the bout is believed to be going ahead after ‘Wonderboy’ agreed to a stipulation which means the Liverpool fighter can weigh no more than 188lbs on Sunday afternoon.

Thompson will also take home 30 per cent of Till’s fight purse.
