Have Chelsea given Jose Mourinho the ‘dreaded vote of confidence’?

Tom Victor

There are some phrases that have an entirely different meaning when it comes to football.

“Used his experience” tends to mean “cheated”, “exciting” means “fast as f**k but can’t control his feet” and when a club says the manager has their “full support”, it’s rarely a good sign.

Jose Mourinho has reached the point in his tenure at a club where things traditionally go to sh*t and he leaves, but this was meant to be different – he’s supposed to be at Chelsea for the long haul.

This might soon be out of his hands, though, as the former Real Madrid coach has received the vote of confidence after a worrying defeat to Southampton.

Chelsea’s latest club statement is just two paragraphs long, but it makes for ominous reading for those familiar with football management doublespeak.

‘The club wants to make it clear that Jose continues to have our full support,’ it begins.

‘As Jose has said himself, results have not been good enough and the team’s performances must improve. However, we believe that we have the right manager to turn this season around and that he has the squad with which to do it.’

Terrifying.
