Alf Stewart looks set to leave Home and Away after 30 years on the show

Stone the flamin’ crows because it’s ‘goodbye for now.’

Tea, avoiding work and Alf Stewart on Home and Away. Three afternoon stalwarts for any student that was procrastinating while they were supposed to be studying and after three decades on Home and Away, it’s time to say goodbye to Alf and his brand of no nonsense Australianisms.

Streuth!

Yep, it’s a sad day because Ray Meagher has announced that he will step down from his role as Alf Stewart in the beloved show.

The 74-year-old has been a stalwart from the very start, that’s over 30 years ago, and he’s leaving Home and Away for a role in the upcoming tenth-anniversary celebration tour of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert.

In an interview with Australian magazine New Idea, he said: “It’s a privilege to have a job for 30 years and really enjoy it for that time.”

Speaking about his new role in the musical, Meagher said that there’s a little bit of Alf in his new character, the mechanic Bob. “I always think Bob is like Alf on Valium! He’s more of a laid-back character than Alf! I do have a couple of verses of a song solo, which are the most petrifying minutes of the show for me!”

The actor currently holds a Guinness World record for being the longest-serving actor in an Australian serial, and he left the door slightly open for a return by saying: “goodbye for now.’

Will this be the last we see of Alf in the bay?
