For the first time in its 22 year history the MOBO Awards will not be taking place
Announced by founder and CEO Kanya King, the award ceremony that celebrates excellence in black music nationally and internationally will be having a year off in 2018.
Kanya’s statement began by saying:
“Today we announce a brand-new era era for MOBO and an exciting new chapter for the MOBO Awards.”
Going on to highlight MOBO’s reputation, Kanya then explained that it was time for “big changes.”
“The evolution of the MOBO Awards is always at the forefront of our mind and we want to ensure that we continue to build on the strong foundation of the brand and its heritage for a wider purpose and bigger impact. We will bring the platform to brand new heights and, most importantly, continue to amplify the exposure of the large pool of exceptional talent celebrated by MOBO.
“As a result, the MBO Awards will not take place this year but will return in 2019.”

The MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards was established in 1996 by Kanya King and Andy Ruffell. Held annually in the United Kingdom, since its inception the MOBO Awards has become one of Europe’s most influential music award ceremonies.
Celebrating artists in the musical fields of Hip Hop, grime, R&B, soul, reggae, jazz, gospel and African music, everyone from 50 Cent, Puff Daddy and TLC to Stormzy, Ms. Dynamite and Craig David have all won MOBO Awards.
