The man was pronounced dead at the scene
A man has died after being hit by a window pane which fell 250ft from a luxury flat in central London.
The police and the London Ambulance Service were called to the Albert Embankment on the Thames riverside at 10:42am after the man was hit by the panel from the 27th floor of the Corniche apartments. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Enquiries are underway to trace the next of kin of the man who has yet to be named. A witness told the London Evening Standard the victim was a passing workman from a nearby construction site.
The witness said: “A glass panel fell from the penthouse and hit a man who was walking under it. It killed him.
“You can see the hole in the top floor where the window fell out.”
Another witness to the incident wrote on Twitter: “I was here this morning before the police or the ambulances got there. It was one of the most distressing things I’ve ever seen.”
Apartments cost up to £6million in the Berkeley Group development which is advertised as an “exclusive address” consisting of two, three and four bedroom apartments and penthouses that overlook the Houses of Parliament.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “At this early stage in the investigation, it is believed he was hit by something falling from a building.”
The Met added that The Health and Safety Executive has been informed of the incident and officers remain at the scenes as enquiries continue.
JOE has approached Berkeley Group for comment on the incident.
