The news comes just a few days after the streaming site announced they were also cancelling Iron Fist
In the same week that Netflix should be celebrating the fact that Daredevil is getting some great reviews and a return to form of the incredible first season, it has been overcast by the fact that it has also cancelled two of Matt Murdock’s Defenders BFFS.
Just a few days ago, it was confirmed that Iron Fist wouldn’t be returning for a third season (which is somewhat understandable, as nobody seemed to like the show), but now The Hollywood Reporter have announced that Luke Cage will also not be back for a Season 3.
A joint press release by Netflix and Marvel stated the following:
“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”
The show received good reviews (Season 1 got 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and S2 got 83%), but a source told THR that “the cancellation was due to creative differences and the inability to agree to terms for a third season of the show”.
That leaves Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher remaining on Netflix, but with Disney set to launch their own streaming service in 2019, there is a chance that some of these cancelled shows might be picked up and brought over to that platform instead.
