The game will take place on May 18
Barcelona’s Nou Camp will play host to its first ever rugby league game next year, when Catalan Dragons take on Wigan Warriors in Super League.
Having beaten Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup final earlier this year, Catalans, who are based in the French city of Perpignan, were invited by Barca to parade the trophy around their 100,000 capacity stadium during half-time of their La Liga game with Girona.
Following this, it’s now been confirmed that the stadium – the biggest in Europe – will play host to their meeting with Super League champions Wigan next May.
“This is landmark moment in Super League’s history, and we are extremely proud to play our part in making history,” said Wigan Chairman, Ian Lenagan.
“Having European rugby league’s two current title holders face each other in the iconic surroundings of the Camp Nou is a mouth-watering prospect and is one that I truly believe will be an historic occasion for the sport.”
The game will be the second time Catalans have played in Barcelona, their last visit seeing them play in the city’s Olympic Stadium in 2009.
Josep Maria Bartomeu, Barcelona’s president, welcomed supporters of both sides to the stadium.
“I encourage the Dragons supporters to treat our stadium like their home and for Wigan and Barca fans to also share the experience of seeing rugby league played at the Camp Nou,” he said.
