Tyson Fury has earned some downtime
For more than a year, Fury has hardly left the gym as he shed close to 150lbs and picked up where he left off in terms of his technique during a stunning comeback to the pinnacle of the heavyweight division.
Most fans felt that ‘The Gypsy King’ deserved to win last weekend’s WBC heavyweight title fight against Deontay Wilder despite the two knockdowns suffered by the Brit in the second half of the bout.
Such was the reaction to the split draw that the World Boxing Council voted to sanction a direct rematch between the unbeaten rivals.
And while Fury is already back working on his fitness ahead of the second clash, his fight camp will not officially begin until after Christmas as promoter Frank Warren has rightly admitted that he deserves some time off.
Warren also revealed that he is targeting a UK stadium fight in late Spring for Fury, who would love nothing more than to headline a card at Old Trafford.
“We will start talks next week,” Warren told the Telegraph. “Tyson Fury has been in camp for virtually a year so we need to give him a break for Christmas.
“We are pushing hard to have the rematch in the UK. We will look to do the fight sometime in the late spring 2019 and are looking at a stadium if it happens in the UK.
“If we can’t get it here, it may well go to Las Vegas. But we believe Fury is now in the driving seat. He is the No 1 heavyweight in the world. I said whoever won the fight would be the No 1 and in my eyes and those of numerous astute judges, we believe Fury did win the fight.”
