BJ Penn just can’t help himself
Penn simply loves a fight and refuses to acknowledge when enough is enough, having now suffered six consecutive defeats in the Octagon.
The former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion made what many deemed an ill-advised return to action last year, when he was stopped by Yair Rodriguez, and his next outing saw him drop a majority decision to fellow veteran, Dennis Siver.
Most fighters are convinced to call it a day when their chin gives up on them but for Penn, perhaps it will be his first-ever submission defeat that persuades him to hang up his gloves for good.
‘The Prodigy’ was forced to tap after finding himself caught in a vice-like heel hook from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu whiz Ryan Hall.
The submission came at the midway point of the opening round of the lightweight contest on Saturday night’s UFC 232 undercard.
Ever the humble professional, Hall gave the Hawaiian legend the credit he deserves after a stellar career in the Octagon.
“Just to compete against BJ is a surreal experience, I’ve learned so much from him, he’s one of my heroes,” Hall said. “If I can accomplish 1/10th of what he’s accomplished, I’ll be grateful.”
