Peaky Blinders season six is officially being written

Paul Moore

Season 5 has just finished filming and even more is coming

Throughout the course of Peaky Blinders, Tommy Shelby has frequently shown that he’s one of the most relentless, driven, and hard working characters on TV.

The same could be said about the show’s creator, Steven Knight.

Aside from writing the superb show, Knight is also the man that penned Locke (he directed that too), Eastern Promises, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Allied, and the upcoming film, Serenity – a film he also directed.

Oh yeah, he’s also currently working on season 2 of Taboo, A Christmas Carol, and the films Rio and World War Z 2.

Again, he’s a very busy man.

This being said, with news that Peaky Blinders is set to continue for even longer than what was originally expected – and the persistent rumours of a film – it’s clear that the Shelby gang are very much at front of his thoughts.

As previously reported, season 5 has just finished filming but there’s no rest for Knight because he plans on going back to the writing table very soon.

During an interview with Slate to promote Serenity, Knight was happy to discuss the writing process for Peaky Blinders and it appears that he’s busier than ever.

“Peaky is a very personal thing for me because it’s based on stories that I was told as a kid by my parents. At the very beginning, I tried to have other writers involved but it just didn’t work,” he said.

“There’s no writers room, or any other writer involved. I write everything from beginning to end. Maybe it’s just me not being able to let go of something, especially with Peaky. I can’t let it go.”

With season 5 set to involve the Wall Street Crash and the rise of fascism, it appears that the show could be taking on a more political dimension. This being said, Knight always had a clear vision about how Peaky Blinders will end and he’s looking forward to writing even more episodes.

“I’m about to start writing season 6 now and if all the wheels fall off, or it goes horribly wrong, there’s probably people that will say something (about his writing process). But at this moment, it has its own logic and momentum. Right now, it feels as if the characters are just writing themselves,” he said.

As for Knight’s immediate futures, Serenity is set to be released on 1 March while season 5 of Peaky Blinders airs on BBC1 later this year.
