We all have our reasons for supporting our chosen football team.
Many of us will choose the same team as our dad, the one that always wins or just follow the local club so it’s possible to go to games.
But Kevin Spacey’s support for DC United may have an even stranger origin.
The actor plays Frank Underwood in House of Cards, the Netflix drama which is set in and around Washington DC, and Spacey’s method acting is so strong that the political show has filtered into his football fandom.
Since meeting members of the MLS club’s first team in September, the 56-year-old has taken DCU under his wing, keeping an eye on their results.
Thanks for coming @DCUnited! When can we talk what Frank U's goal celebration would look like? Open to suggestions… pic.twitter.com/CwrxErwpSO

And if you thought he was just politely returning a hello, you couldn’t be further from the truth.
Spacey got back in touch to congratulate Ben Olsen’s men on making the end-of-season playoffs.
Congrats to @DCUnited on your impressive come-from-behind win to clinch a playoff spot! Good luck in the @mls postseason K🚀

And we like to think he stayed in to watch the nail-biting 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution, giving them a helping hand along the way.
Ben, it seems my pep talk at practice worked! A few encouraging words from their Commander in Chief goes a long way. K🚀@dcunited @MLS #DCU
