The new Liam Gallagher documentary is a love letter to the hardcore fans

Dave Hanratty

It lands in cinemas pretty soon

Liam Gallagher is a man who lends himself especially well to the screen. As frontman of Oasis, he stalked about the place with a swagger and charisma that many musicians envied.

As an interview subject, he has been a journalist’s dream.

As a key fixture in a documentary like Supersonic, you legitimately couldn’t make the thing without him.

Love him or hate him, the younger of the brothers Gallagher remains box office all these years on.

On that note, there’s another documentary about to hit cinemas, one that puts him front and centre.

“I know how fucking great I am, and I know how shit I am, do you know what I mean?” he asks, a touch rhetorically in the trailer for Liam Gallagher: As It Was.

“I’m proud of fucking staying alive man, of being here, of not becoming a fucking casualty,” he adds.

Directed by Charlie Lightening and Gavin Fitzgerald, As It Was presents an all-access, no-holds-barred look at Liam as he looks to leave both Oasis and Beady Eye behind and begin again.

He takes aim at critics, at pre-written tabloid headlines, at those waiting for him to die a clichéd rock star death that will satisfy the narrative.

As It Was hits cinemas on Friday 7 June.
