The NFL could probably contest its own category in the Darwin Awards, and this year’s winner would no doubt be New York Giants star Jason Pierre-Paul.
The defensive lineman hit the headlines during the summer after blowing off his finger in a fireworks accident with reports of the damage suffered varying wildly as he and the Giants engaged in a stand-off over his contract status and his return to action.
The 26-year-old is finally back with the Giants after signing a one-year deal last week, and in his first session with the media was happy to put his damaged hand on display.
Pierre-Paul lost the index finger on his right hand, but also suffered major damage to his thumb and middle finger, and everyone connected to the NFL will be watching closely to see if his play is affected.
Fortunately, Pierre-Paul’s role as a pass-rusher does not require him to handle the ball, but the use of the hands is an important weapon in shedding blockers to get after the quarterback.
