Theresa May is giving MPs yet another chance to vote on Brexit
Theresa May is giving MPs another vote on Brexit in the form of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill in early June, Downing Street has said.
If successful, the bill will incorporate May’s Brexit plan into UK law. If defeated, the UK will be set for either a no deal Brexit or Article 50 to be revoked.
According to BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith this is because the EU will not grant an extension beyond October 31.
The announcement comes following what Number 10 described as ‘useful and constructive’ talks between Theresa May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
“This evening the prime minister met the leader of the opposition in the House of Commons to make clear our determination to bring the talks to a conclusion and deliver on the referendum result to leave the EU,” a Downing Street spokesman said.
Labour sources, however, say they will not back the withdrawal bill without a cross-party deal.
Attempts to find a cross-party compromise began after the prime minister’s previous Brexit deal was rejected three times by MPs.
The vote will take place during the week commencing June 3.
