Lockdown 2 is imminent
Boris Johnson is set to announce a month-long national lockdown in England, the BBC is reporting.
Having gradually relaxed initial measures introduced in March to control the spread of coronavirus, new cases have soared, prompting the government to bring in new restrictions.
The new measures will see non-essential shops and hospitality have to shut down but, unlike the first lockdown in the spring, schools, colleges and universities will be permitted to remain open.
Although details are unclear at this moment, the new restrictions are expected to have implications for travel, too.
The restrictions are expected to begin on Thursday, ending on December 2.
Official confirmation is expected imminently, with the prime minister scheduled to speak to the nation in a news conference at 5pm on Saturday.
Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer, and the government’s chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance will join him for the briefing.
