Four-day weekend!
It has been announced that the UK will be getting an extra bank holiday in 2022 to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
We will get a four-day weekend over the 2nd June to the 5th of June. The traditional late May spring bank holiday will be moved to Thursday 2nd June, and then Friday 3rd June will be an extra day off as well.
The Queen will actually have been on the throne for 70 years on 6 February 2022, but the elebrations will take place in the summer.
“The Platinum Jubilee offers an opportunity for the Queen to express her thanks for the support and loyalty Her Majesty has received throughout her reign,” said a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman.
“The Queen hopes that as many people as possible will have the opportunity to join the celebrations.”
In a tweet, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said there would be a “spectacular, once-in-a-generation show in 2022 to say thank you Ma’am for seven decades of dedication to our nation”.
Similar bank holidays took place to mark The Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, her Golden Jubilee in 1981, and Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
Additional days off have also taken place to mark other royal events. The weddings of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips in 1973, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 and Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011 all coincided with an extra bank holiday.
Event to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 included a parade along the Thames, made up of over 600 boats from around the Commonwealth, and a Diamond Jubilee concert featuring performances from the likes of Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue, Elton John and Shirley Bassey.
The Golden Jubilee in 2012 featured similar celebrations, including the Party At The Palace – a concert that famously opened with Queen’s Brian May playing ‘God Save The Queen’ on the roof of Buckingham Palace.
