Backing up your data doesn’t sound very rock n’roll, but Kirk Hammett is wishing he did it now.

The Metallica guitarist made a guest appearance on Hatebreed frontman Jarney Jasta’s podcast recently (a transcript of which appeared on Blabbermouth) and revealed that he lost an iPhone containing hundreds of muscial samples.

“I put riffs on my iPhone, but something very unfortunate happened to me about six months ago,” Hammett said.

“I lost my iPhone [containing] 250 musical ideas. And I was crushed. It didn’t get backed up.”

Hammett retains hope that his iPhone might show up and with good reason too; of the 250 riffs he had saved to the phone, he can only remember about eight of them.

If that’s the case, we have to ask, can they really have been that good?

That said, if the phone is never recovered, the next ‘Enter Sandman’ could be sitting on a lost iPhone, never to be heard by the world at large.

Despite Hammett’s misfortune, Metallica are believed to have written approximately 20 songs for a new album which is in the works and reportedly on the way real soon.

It will be the band’s first album since the release of ‘Death Magnetic’ in 2008.
