Louis van Gaal claims Gary Neville faces difficult task at Valencia

"I wish him luck because he needs it"

Speaking ahead of his side’s game against West Ham, Louis van Gaal offered his opinion on the “big challenge” awaiting Gary Neville at Valencia.

“Valencia is a very big club in Spain with a lot of history,” claimed Van Gaal, who has managed in Spain with Barcelona on two separate occasions.

“They have won a lot of titles also, so it’s a big step and a big challenge for him. I am very happy but also curious how he will do.”

The United boss also suggested that not speaking Spanish would be problematic for Neville, though the former United captain has identified this as something he needs to work on.

“He doesn’t speak the language so it’s very difficult. He has his brother [Phil], he speaks fluent Spanish, but still it’s a big challenge and I wish him a lot of luck because he needs luck.”

Van Gaal suggested that adapting to the cultural differences would be equally demanding, so it will be crucial that Neville follows through on his plans to “immerse himself” into the role.

Valencia are currently ninth in La Liga ahead of the weekend visit of Barcelona. Neville will take charge following that game.
