‘I wanted mum to feel like she was my priority’
Naughty Boy’s niece has revealed that the DJ signed up to appear in I’m a Celeb in a bid to raise awareness about dementia after caring for his mother who suffers from the condition.
Taking care of his 67-year-old mother Zahida, Naughty Boy took a step back from his career to be a more sufficient carer. Now, the DJ is back in the spotlight – but for one of the most honourable reasons.
His niece, 23-year-old Aisha Shaban, told New Magazine that her uncle wants to use the platform to spread awareness. An ambassador for Dementia UK also said that joining the ITV roster is a huge opportunity for him to showcase everything he does “and help everyone see the real him.”
Shaban also said that doing I’m a Celeb is her uncle’s way of easing back into the public eye.
In 2017, Zahida suffered a massive stroke that put her into a coma and though she eventually woke up, she was not the same. The music producer stopped recording his second album and moved in with his mother to be her primary carer.
“It’s important to have priorities,” the artist – real name Shahid Khan – told the Mirror before he went into the castle.
“I wanted mum to feel like she was my priority. For two years I pushed the album aside and I’m glad I did that.”
I’m a Celeb had to take a break over the weekend due to the destruction caused by Storm Arwen – but don’t worry, it’s back tonight.
In a statement, the show said: “Owing to technical difficulties caused by extreme weather conditions in the area, there will be no new episodes of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! this weekend (Saturday and Sunday).
“I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! will be replaced tonight and tomorrow night in the ITV schedules by compilation shows (voiced by Ant & Dec) featuring best moments from previous series.”
