Met police to review leaked video of Downing Street aides joking about Christmas party

It doesn’t look like they’re going to hold their hands up any time soon

The Metropolitan Police are set to investigate even more recent footage which shows Jacob Rees-Mogg joking about the no 10 Christmas party scandal.

In the video widely circulated by Guido Fawkes, Rees-Mogg can be clearly seen joking about whether or not this party will be investigated in a year’s time – a rather blatant nod to the ongoing investigation.

This is the second piece of footage the appears to show Conservative Party members blatantly joking about having attended a Christmas party, with the previous video of Boris Johnson’s former spokesperson Allegra Stratton having gone viral.

Rees-Mogg is said to have been speaking at this year’s Christmas party for the Institute of Economic Affairs when he joked about police investigating last year’s event that the UK government still denies even happened.

As you can see, he goes on to quip, “I see we’re all here obeying regulations, aren’t we?” and state boldly, “I mean, this party is not going to be investigated by the police in a year’s time.”

The 52-year-old Commons leader goes on to joke: “You are all very carefully socially distanced… we have moved, I am pleased to tell you, from the metric back to the Imperial system – I notice you are all at least two inches away from each other which is, as I understand it, what the regulations require.”

As per Sky News, the Met has said they are now considering complaints about the two reported parties on November 27th and December 18th, when the UK was still under tier three lockdown conditions.

The current statement is: “It is our policy not to routinely investigate retrospective breaches of the Covid-19 regulations, however, the footage will form part of our considerations.” Considering it quite literally shows Jacob Rees-Mogg joking about the no 10 Christmas party – you know, the one that definitely didn’t happen – we imagine it will be rather central to their investigation.
