The announcement was made with just hours to spare
London’s famous New Year’s Eve fireworks will be going ahead tonight, but people will only be able to watch it on television.
Earlier this year, the fireworks display was cancelled for the second year running because of the pandemic.
But with just hours to go before 2022, it has been announced that London’s fireworks will be going ahead.
Authorities have stressed that it is not a public event though and that the only way the show can be viewed is by tuning in to BBC One at midnight.
The display will be a smaller one that usual.
The Sun reports that the televised show will feature a pre-recorded performance from Elton John and Dua Lipa, along with messages from Gareth Southgate, Sir Ian McKellen and Sadiq Khan.
The London Mayor confirmed the news on Twitter, announcing that an “incredible NYE broadcast” would take place live on BBC One.

In October, the decision was taken to cancel the display for a second year in a row because of the pandemic.
Speaking of the cancellation, a spokesperson for London mayor Sadiq Khan said: “Due to the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, our world-famous New Year’s Eve display will not be held on the banks of the Thames this year.
“Last year’s successful show took place in a slightly different way due to the pandemic, and this year a number of exciting new options are being considered as part of our New Year’s Eve celebrations in London.”
Plans had been put in place for a 6,500-person party in Trafalgar Square, but these were shelved with the emergence of the Omicron variant.
