Prince Andrew’s servants ‘ordered to arrange teddy bears on bed every night’

Apparently the Prince would ‘scream and shout’ if his teddies were not the right positions

Prince Andrew would once order royal staff to arrange teddies, soft toys and named pillows in exact positioning every night.

An ex-royal officer told ITV that the Prince, 61, would “scream and shout” if his teddies were not in specific positions by the time he went to bed. Handwritten sketches detail their exact locations and a royal source claimed it included two hippo soft toys and a black panther.

The source said the sketch also includes the arrangement of his pillows – with cushions called “daddy”, “ducks” and “Prince” all requiring unique placement. The sketch even details how to place blankets, and of course, the ribbons must hang off his bed.

Prince Andrew

“It’s hilarious a Prince of England would want his teddies on his bed,” the insider source said. “You can imagine him crying, ‘Mummy, they haven’t put the hippos on my bed!’ to the Queen if anyone got it wrong.”

They added: “Maybe they were presents from his daughters or Fergie, but it’s still strange.”

The sketches, which were laminated, were titled “DOY bed: Points for turn down & making the bed”.

The instructions detailed: “When the DOY is staying overnight, place one small teddy & cushion in the turn down.

“When making the bed, place the teddy & cushion next to the teddy on the left- hand side with the necklaces on.”

In capital letters, the instructions added: “Do not loose (sic) the teddy & cushion!!”

The plans demand that the “teddy holding heart” must be placed on the left-hand side of the headboard, with the grey hippo on the right and a black panther halfway down. Another hippo must then be placed on a green throw at the foot of the bed.

Former Royal Protection Command officer Paul Page, who served between 1998 and 2004, said he saw Andrew’s bed in his private apartment stacked high with stuffed toys- for context, Andrew was 39 at the time.

“It had about 50 or 60 stuffed toys positioned on the bed and basically there was a card the inspector showed us in a drawer and it was a picture of these bears all in situ,” he said.

“The reason for the laminated picture was if those bears weren’t put back in the right order by the maids, he would shout and scream.”

Royal biographer Angela Levin commented, stating that their positioning is “almost like he has given them orders”.

She added: “It is hugely embarrassing as here is a man who flew helicopters in the Falklands War and was in the Royal Navy for more than twenty years and the country was very proud of him.

“Yet here is an incredible insecurity as he needs to have his teddies by his side. Perhaps he is very lonely.”
