Uma Thurman remembers wearing lots of rubber for Batman and Robin

‘As I told Lady Freeze when I pulled her plug, this is a one woman show’

This year marks 25-years since Batman and Robin leapt onto screens, complete with iconic villains and suits that had the most remarkable nipples.

Acting veteran and all-around badass Uma Thurman spoke to ET about her time on the film, which she remembers as a “fantastic experience.”

“Oh my goodness, that’s amazing,” Thurman said about the film’s upcoming 25th anniversary. “I was just talking about Joel Schumacher, the director who is a friend I love so much … I loved Joel Schumacher.”

She added: “That was a fantastic experience. I had to wear lots of rubber suits. I did not have a rubber mask. I had my own face, but I had some rubber appliances on my face sometimes. That was about as much rubber as I’ve ever worked with, personally.”

Thurman played Poison Ivy, a character first depicted in DC comics back in 1966, who has the innate ability to control plants. While the on-screen adaptation largely nerfed the characters abilities, Thurman portrayed the character effortlessly.

Helmed by Joel Schumacher, Thurman starred alongside George Clooney as Batman, Chris O’Donnell as Robin, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the secondary antagonist, Mr Freeze.

While the film was not well received at the time, the film itself has gained a cult following. The New York Times spared Thurman of criticism, dubbing her “perfect… Like Mae West, she mixes true femininity with the winking womanliness of a drag queen.”

To this day, the nipples on Batman and Robin’s suits are still spoken about in hushed tones.
