Blade Runner TV series coming to Amazon

Danny Jones

The series will serve as a sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049

A Blade Runner TV series is coming to Amazon Prime Video and we could not be more excited.

As per a Deadline exclusive, the iconic sci-fi franchise will be given a live-action TV treatment by original director Ridley Scott himself and while production has not yet started, we know it’s going to be called Blade Runner 2099.

Denis Villeneuve (Dune, Arrival, Sicario) is not currently thought to be involved with the project, but it is said that the show will serve as the follow-up to his equally acclaimed 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049.

Sources close to the story 2099 is “in priority development”, meaning that those attached are “fast-tracking scripts”, production dates are being readily discussed and a writers room is being built. It is also thought that Scott will direct.

Silka Luisa is set to be the showrunner with Alcon Entertainment producing in association with Scott Free Productions and Amazon Studios. Naturally, there is not even a rough idea of a release date at this early stage.

Blade Runner remains one of the most iconic movies of the 80s and the sci-fi genre, with its instantly recognisable aesthetic influencing entries genres like cyberpunk and shows like Altered Carbon.

It will be interesting to see how the new show will blend not only Scott and Villeneuve’s highly stylised looks, but also draw on the original book by Philip K. Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

This isn’t the only blockbuster series coming to the platform either, as we recently got a deeper look at set photos from the highly-anticipated Lord of the Rings series, The Rings of Power. Safe to say we’ll be getting our teeth firmly into both.
