Rest in peace to a legend

Following the shocking news of Taylor Hawkins’ death, aged just 50, the music world is uniting on social media to pay tribute to a rock and roll legend.

The Foo Fighters drummer passed away on Friday, March 25 in Bogota, Colombia, amid the band’s South American tour and just two days before they were set to headline Lollapalooza Brazil on Sunday. His cause of death is still unknown.

The band tweeted: “The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever. “Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time.”

A Rock and Roll Hall of Famer as part of the Foos, the news has echoed throughout the music world and artists from around the world have taken to social media to pay tribute.

Long time friends of the band, Coldplay reportedly gave dedicated an impromptu performance of their song “Everglow” to Hawkins following the news of his passing during their gig in Mexico on Friday night.

Hawkins was the band’s drummer for 25 of 28 years in their career thus far, joining shortly after their 1997 sophomore album, The Colour and Shape.

He went on to not only become one of the leading personalities in the band alongside frontman Dave Grohl, but often gave vocal performances both from behind the drumkit and as a frontman. Here he is and Reading and Leeds 2019:

Just two days prior to his death, Hawkins was seen taking photos with fans on the band’s South American leg.

Once regaling LA radio station 95.5 Klos with the story of their meeting, Grohl – the former drummer for Nirvana himself – revealed how the two came to meet while Hawkins was a touring drummer with Alanis Morrisette.

Picking up the phone, Hawkins said “You know I’m your guy” and Grohl insists they had been best friends ever since. Writing in his autobiography, he said: “Upon first meeting, our bond was immediate and we grew closer with every day, every song, every note that we ever played together. We are absolutely meant to be and I am grateful that we found each other in this lifetime.”

Rest in peace to a legend.
