After assaulting a 72-year-old woman and stealing her car, a thief died shortly after – crashing said car on the interstate highway.

Shirlene Hernandez had stopped for a coke at a Shell garage in San Antonio, Texas, only to be assaulted by an unnamed man on April 5. Hernandez was left covered with bruises and blood as three men allegedly attempted to tackle her assailant. Unfortunately, he was able to steal her car keys and sped off into the distance.

In what many have allegedly referred to as an act of “karma”, the assailant was soon found dead in the totalled vehicle on a nearby highway.

“There’s a lot of people who would say what goes around comes around, karma. I did not think that; the only thing I got (was) really sad because he had died,” the great-grandmother explained.”I did not think that; the only thing I got (was) really sad because he had died.

“The Lord saw fit to take him out of his misery,” she added.

“I just hope that if this situation happens to anybody else, that somebody will step forward, leap forward, run forward, whatever and help the person that it’s happening to,” she told WOAI/WBRC.News4SanAntonio

However Hernandez doesn’t “want to quit working” and will need to get another car. To provide assistance, her granddaughter Helen Garcia has set up a GoFundMe page to aid in raising finances for a replacement vehicle. At the time of writing, the fund had already accumulated $28,065.

Hernandez is expected to make a full recovery.
