“It’s no surprise eating children seems a more likely path for our country.”
Channel 4 users have been left absolutely flabbergasted after watching a mockumentary presented by Gregg Wallace about eating human flesh.
The show, which aired last night, was presented as if it was a real documentary leading many viewers to believe what they were seeing was authentic.
Under the unassuming title, Gregg Wallace: The British Meat Miracle, the show, written by Matt Edmonds, sees Wallace introduced to a fake company called Good Harvest who are the top of the game in the sales of ‘human meat’.
Wallace can be seen visiting a human meat harvesting plant in Lincolnshire where he meets some of the donors. While wandering around the factory, Wallace explains that: “Under EU law, we couldn’t possibly operate machines like this due to legislation. But now we can harvest people and pay them for their flesh”.
Then Wallace travels up to London where he meets TV chef Michel Roux Jr who cooks the apparent human meat for him.
In a particularly absurd scene, the cooks then try the apparent meat and try to guess which person it came from.
Another scene in the show, which really disgusted some viewers (who for whatever reason still believed what they were watching was legit), shown Wallace being treated to some ‘toddler tartare’ after being told that children under the age of seven, volunteered by their families, make for particularly good donors.
In another, Wallace is introduced to a donor by the name of Gillian, a 67-year-old former receptionist, who is forced to donate her meat to look after her family.
Speaking to Wallace, Gillian says: “Am I excited about donating? You know there’s something wrong when you’ve got to jump on a bus and have some flesh scooped out of your arm for money.”
At the end of the episode, Wallace himself explains: “No wonder the state is behind their sacrifice 100 per cent. The Trussell Trust says a future without food banks requires a benefits system that works for all and secure incomes so people can afford essentials. So it’s no surprise eating children seems a more likely path for our country.”
The mockumentary was of course created to shine light on the current living crisis and to show just what people could be willing to do to get by.
Despite the show’s best intentions, viewers were apparently left disgusted with many branding it ‘distasteful’ and ‘sickening’.
One person wrote: “This Channel 4 programme with Gregg Wallace and the geezer growing a human steak in a laboratory is really freaking me out.”
Another argued: “Just watched Gregg Wallace’s The British Miracle Meat on C4, quite frankly it’s the sickest thing I’ve ever seen. It was as sinister as any human experiment in Nazi Germany, basically enticing people in poverty to donate flesh to make human meat in exchange for a few hundred £s.”
Even some politicians jumped on the bandwagon and criticised the show saying it should have come with a warning revealing that it is not in fact an actual documentary.
In the aftermath of the show and it’s subsequent backlash, Wallace himself spoke out, saying: “Thank you for watching. I really enjoyed my first ever acting job!” He later shared a second image from the show and wrote: “Satire.”
Honestly, the fact that anyone genuinely believed the show could have even for a second been entirely factual, is a damning testament to the times we live in.
