Conor McGregor’s daring, risky step up from featherweight to welterweight ended with a crushing submission loss at the MGM Grand last night.
The Notorious was forced to tap out when Nate Diaz locked in a choke-hold around his neck. It was McGregor’s first loss in 15 pro fights and sees his ascension in the UFC halted.
John Kavanagh, McGregor’s coach, was confident his fighter would see off Diaz before the fight. ’10 years wrapping these deadly weapons’ he wrote in a caption accompanying McGregor in fight mode and getting his fists wrapped.
By the time the wrappings were cut off, McGregor had tasted defeat. It was his first loss in six years.
As they made their way to a post-fight party, Kavanagh’s pride for McGregor shone through:
‘Couldn’t be prouder of my kid brother,” he wrote.
“He’s raised a sport to a global level and put a small island on a MMA map. People have no idea how hard he pushes himself.’
