We could have just seen Cristiano Ronaldo’s final Real Madrid match of the season.

Having shortened the gap between themselves and Barcelona to a point in the La Liga title race and reached the Champions League semi-finals, the 31-year-old has the chance to make this season his most successful since arriving in the Spanish capital in 2009.

But in the final minutes of their 3-0 victory over Villareal on Wednesday, Ronaldo had Real Madrid supporters the world over a little worried.

Reaching for his hamstring, the Portuguese star was reduced to walking as the game entered its final minutes, prompting fears from Real Madrid supporters that his season may be over.

Although such news was likely to leave Manchester City fans Poznaning away into the small hours of Thursday morning, Zinedine Zidane appeared quietly cautious that Ronaldo would be fit for the Champions League tie.

“Cristiano has felt something, but I think it’s just a scare,” the Real Madrid manager said after the game.

“I hope it won’t be anything serious. Tomorrow we’ll calmly assess the situation.”

“A player like Cristiano, sometimes he should rest, not finish a game, or sit it out. But he always wants to be out on the pitch.”

“I can’t tell you anything else.”
