It’s only been going for a few days, but we’d forgive you for thinking it had been months.
Conor McGregor and the UFC find themselves in the midst of a p*ssing contest over the UFC 200 main event, and we all just want it to go back to the way it was.
The Notorious was all set to face off against Nate Diaz once again as he sought revenge for his UFC 197 defeat to the Californian in March, but a dispute supposedly over media commitments means the Irishman won’t be taking part.
Of course, it’s all been very confusing for fans as McGregor has announced his retirement, then taken it back and then, most recently, announced he was back on the UFC 200 card – a claim which was denied by Dana White just hours later.
The UFC president is adamant that McGregor will play no part in July’s showcase event, but the featherweight champion’s coach thinks there’s still a chance.
“I don’t think we’ve gone past any point of no return,” Kavanagh told Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour on Monday.
“There’s mutual respect from both parties and Dana and Lorenzo are sensible business men. I have no doubt we’ll continue the tradition and after his next fight, Lorenzo will bring out the bottle of Middleton and we’ll do our usual toast.”
The SBG coach then went on to say that he was “51% optimistic” that something could be sorted out to ensure McGregor fights on July 9, and he admitted that the Irishman already has his sights set on another huge fight in November.
