AFC Wimbledon’s rise up the leagues continues.
Despite finishing seventh in the table the Dons secured promotion to League One – their sixth in their 14 years of existence – after beating Plymouth Argyle 2-0 in the League Two playoff final in Wembley on Monday afternoon.
This means that the Wombles will play in the same league as the MK Dons – aka the team that replaced the original Wimbledon FC after their relocation to Milton Keynes.
One of the Wimbledon heroes over the last few years has been Adebayo Akinfenwa, the powerful striker known affectionately as “The Beast”.
The 34-year-old is out of contract this summer, but before he parted ways with the club he joined in 2014 he made sure to leave one last mark.
Deep into injury time, Wimbledon were awarded a penalty after Adebayo Azeez was taken down in the Plymouth box. With the Dons already assured of victory thanks to Lyle Taylor’s 78th-minute goal.
Akinfenwa wrestled the ball off his teammate as he wouldn’t let anyone else steal his big moment.
I wouldn't argue with Adebayo Akinfenwa if he said he was taking the penalty #league2playofffinal #afcwvpafc pic.twitter.com/AG5VTVOxSj

Thankfully, he slotted the penalty away to put the game beyond doubt.

During his post-match interview on Sky, the ever hilarious Akinfenwa spoke directly to the camera as he was clearly overjoyed.
But he paused the celebrations for a moment upon remembering the final whistle signalled the end of his time at Wimbledon and that he was now “technically unemployed”, appealing to any prospective managers to “hit me up on the WhatsApp and get me a job”.
